Getting Back to Life: Tamara’s Recovery After Brain Surgery

“I wasn't afraid for a reason; I had the best surgeon in Dr. Croci, and I knew God was going to take care of me."

When Tamara’s vision began to get fuzzy in October of last year, she knew it was time for an eye checkup. However, when her optometrist told her she needed to schedule an MRI due to inconclusive exam results, she knew something else was going on with her health.

Tamara Cannoy is very independent and loves to be the “helper” in all her relationships. She knew if her MRI came back with abnormal results, she might be leaning on her support system more than she was used to.

Tamara went in for her MRI, and her primary care provider called her after getting the results, urging her to go to the emergency department immediately.  At the ER, they performed more X-rays, CT scans, and blood work. They saw a large mass on the base of her skull pushing on the optic nerves and pituitary gland in her brain.

Dr. Jose Torres Gluck and Dr. Davide Croci, Lakeland Regional Health neurosurgeons, worked together to determine the best course of action for Tamara’s tumor. Dr. Croci, who specializes in treating tumors affecting the base of the skull and complex brain tumors, discussed options for removing it and scheduling surgery right away. Tamara agreed, knowing she was in the best hands.

Dr. Davide Croci was the best surgeon. I liked him so much. He wanted to meet me in his office before surgery day because he didn’t want to meet me on the surgery table for the first time. He kept me informed throughout the whole process. He showed me pictures of my brain, of my tumor, and told me everything they were going to do in surgery and recovery. This helped me be brave, not only for me but for my daughter. I didn’t want her to be scared.”

On August 21, 2024, Tamara had a five-hour brain surgery. The symptom she had for this tumor was blurry vision, which was causing her a significant impairment in her daily life. If not for her annual eye exam and the quick responses from her LRH care team, her tumor would have kept growing and made her blind. The benign tumor, meningioma, was localized on the base of her skull, causing pressure on the optic nerves and pituitary gland. The pressure of the tumor on the optic nerves was causing her to become blind.

Tamara does not remember the first few days of recovery after surgery, but she trusted her care team to take great care of her. She is still on the road to recovery, but her vision has greatly improved, thanks to the expertise of her surgeons.

“I am steadily getting better and can now see my computer screen for work. For the first three weeks, I could see well enough to get around the house, and my vision continued to get better. The symptoms of the tumor definitely took a hit to morale, so it’s hard to stay positive. I worried this would force me into retirement at 66 years old, but I am not ready to retire, and now I am doing so much better!”

Now, Tamara is getting back to her life. She enjoys getting together with family, heading to Auburndale for racing, and just enjoying the normal things in life.

“I am happy to report they got all of it, and my recent MRI showed the tumor is all gone. During this whole experience, I wasn’t afraid for a reason; I had the best surgeon, and I knew God was going to take care of me.”
