Did you know?

1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 WILL break a bone due to osteoporosis.

Post-menopausal women are 5 times more likely to suffer a second fracture within 1 year.

With proper treatment, you can reduce the risk of repeat fractures by 50%.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone. It causes low bone mass, resulting in bone fragility.  These changes to the bone structure weaken bones and lead to a higher risk for fractures. It is called a silent disease. Patients often don’t know they have it until they have a fracture.

As you age, bone breaks down more than it regenerates. This can lead to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects both men and women of all races, but some people are more at risk.

Am I a Candidate for a Bone Health Evaluation?

We recommend the following individuals be evaluated:

  1. Women 65 years old and older
  2. Men 70 years old and older
  3. Men or women 50 years old and older who have a history of fracture caused by a low-energy trauma such as a ground-level fall.

Once there is a diagnosis, our team designs a treatment plan for you. With proper treatment and education, Lakeland Regional Health can help you take positive steps to support and protect your bones.
