Lakeland Regional Health;

The Pioneers of Expert Heart Care

A chat with Dr. Philip Owen about the Jack and Tina Harrell Institute for Advanced Cardiovascular Medicine

Philip S. Owen, MD

Interventional Cardiologist

Your heart is a busy, innovative, and hardworking system. There is so much to know about this incredible muscle! For example, did you know a healthy adult heart is about the size of your fist? What about the average size of your arteries? They are about 4 mm wide, which is about 0.15 of an inch! Did you know that your heart will beat approximately 36.5 million times per year? And your heart pumps nearly 2,000 gallons of blood to your body per day!

It is a pretty amazing muscle. We think this hard working, complex system that keeps us going deserves the best care we can give. That’s why Lakeland Regional Health offers patients the advanced services at our Jack and Tina Harrell Institute for Advanced Cardiovascular Medicine.

With all the care we give at Lakeland Regional Health, you may not be aware of all the heart health services and programs we offer. Dr. Philip S. Owen, an Interventional Cardiologist at Lakeland Regional Health, discusses all the available and advanced care we give to our patients at the Jack and Tina Harrell Institute for Advanced Cardiovascular Medicine.

Along with each cardiologist at Lakeland Regional Health, Dr. Owen is dedicated to caring for each patient’s unique heart health needs.

Advancing Heart Care for the last 30 Years

Originally from Toronto, Dr. Owen has been practicing cardiology for over 25 years in Florida, specializing in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, invasive procedures, non-invasive procedures, and vascular surgery with an active outpatient and inpatient practice.

Dr. Owen typically sees patients experiencing chest pain, cardiac preoperative, patients experiencing congestive heart failure, AFib, palpitations, hypertension, and more. He treats each patient as an individual, ensuring they receive the best continuum of care possible, starting with a referral to the cardiologists and team at the Institute from your primary care provider.

“Going back to the 90s, Lakeland Regional Health is truly a pioneer in cardiovascular care and advanced treatments. There is a rich history of cardiovascular advancements that were made right here in this hospital.” Dr. Owen feels patients can feel confident about the excellent care they’ll receive at Lakeland Regional Health’s Jack and Tina Harrell Institute for Advanced Cardiovascular Medicine.

Advanced Facilities, Designed
with You in Mind

In the Institute, we have:

  • Four standard cardiac catheterization labs where we perform less-invasive procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacements.
  • Two electrophysiology labs which can be used to monitor and map the heart’s electrical systems and treat heart rhythm problems such as arrhythmias.
  • Multiple hybrid labs which are operating rooms with the ability for diagnostic angiography where we can study the blood vessels to show any concerns within the heart or arteries.

Why is this important to you and your heart health? “This advanced facility allows procedures to be done, that say 10 years ago would not be an option. This means avoiding open heart surgery, when possible, in favor of less-invasive procedures such as TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement),” Dr. Owen explains.

Within the Institute, there are three centers of excellence, so patients are treated for their specific needs, The Harrell Heart Center, Chest Pain Center, and the Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. These centers are designed with programs to treat a wide range of heart-related concerns. Click here to learn more about each center and their services.

A Team, Dedicated to Your Heart

Care is delivered by board-certified, highly experienced cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, non-invasive cardiologists, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, electrophysiologists, anesthesiologists and specialty-trained cardiac nurses, cardiac rehabilitation team, along with other multidisciplinary heart specialists.

At the Institute, we have five cardiologists and a number of associated nurse practitioners and nurses who provide both inpatient and outpatient care at the medical center. We also have an electrophysiologist who provides specific care for pacemaker devices and Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) placements for patients and interventional cardiologists to care for patients who experience heart attacks at night. Additionally, we have a cardiac rehabilitation program for those who are recovering from bypass surgery for example and require rehabilitation to regain strength.

“Overall, we look after patients with the understanding that it’s important to keep a continuity of care. If you have a doctor in the outpatient department and you’re admitted with us at the Institute, we will keep that continuity, so you have familiarity with your care team,” says Dr. Owen.

Cardiologists Who Practice What They Tell Their Patients

Dr. Owen always tries to be a model for his patients when it comes to heart health. “I try to do things that give me a work-life balance, to reduce stress when I can. The salad bar at the hospital is excellent! Lots of eating the colors. When someone looks at my lunch they’ll say, ‘That’s what food eats!’”

Dr. Owen encourages patients to care for their heart by eating healthy and exercising at least 2-3 times a week. “I really enjoy playing pickleball and doing yoga, maybe even skiing if I can get away. I try to do the things I tell my patients to do:

  • Eat healthy
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Keep the sugars down
  • Stay away from high-end fat and heavy dairy
  • Get moving at least 2-3 times a week!”
