LRH Medical Center Recognized by Newsweek As One of Country’s Best Maternity Care Hospitals

Lakeland, FL – Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center earned a prestigious spot on Newsweek’sBest Maternity Care Hospitals, released on July 21, 2020.

The Medical Center is one of only six Florida hospitals on the list, which features a total of 231 hospitals throughout the United States.

“We are proud to be nationally recognized for the compassionate and highly skilled care we provide to the women and families of our community,” said Lori Shea, Lakeland Regional Health Associate Vice President, Women’s and Children’s Services. “Our Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby nurses and physicians are committed to delivering the best outcomes and safest care to new moms.”

Newsweek bases its rankings on information from The Leapfrog Group, which reports on safety and quality performance at hospitals around the country. Among the criteria considered are low rates of cesarean sections, episiotomies and early elective deliveries and following important protocols that protect mothers and babies.

In addition to this honor, Lakeland Regional Health has been honored for two consecutive years by the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Department of Health for achieving the Healthy People 2020 target goal for lowering cesarean section deliveries for first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies.

The Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women and Children opened its doors in June 2018 and has had great success in expanding the care that women, babies and children receive. Among the expanded and new services in fiscal year 2019:

  • Polk County’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • 401 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit admissions
  • Polk County’s only Dedicated Children’s Emergency Department
