Interventional Cardiology Program

Our Interventional Cardiology Program is exceptional. As such, Boston Scientific sought out our Harrell Heart Center cardiologists to perform the innovative WATCHMAN™ closure device procedure, making us the third hospital in Florida to offer this life-saving implant. Our interventional cardiologists focus on complex coronary disease, structural heart disease and peripheral vascular disease and are leaders in interventional cardiovascular medicine.

Procedures in our Interventional Cardiology Program include:

STENTS
Our Harrell Heart Center team is able to perform heart stent placements through the radial artery in a patient’s wrist rather than through the groin. Nationally, only 10% percent of stents are placed with this approach. Using this access method causes less patient discomfort and allows for a quicker recovery time. Patients are usually able to get out of bed and walk shortly after their procedure.

LEFT ATRIAL APPENDAGE CLOSURE
Lakeland Regional Health offers patients needing left atrial appendage closure a variety of treatment options including the Lariat, WATCHMAN™ and Amulet devices. Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center was the third hospital in Florida to perform the life-changing WATCHMAN™ procedure. The WATCHMAN™ device is intended for patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and who are at high risk of stroke while on the blood thinner warfarin. A physician inserts this closure device through the femoral vein up to the left atrial appendage, where it sits and totally closes the appendage. By closing off the appendage, the risk of stroke may be reduced, and, over time, patients may be able to stop taking warfarin.

HYBRID CATHETERIZATION LAB
Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center is home to Polk County’s only Hybrid Catheterization Lab. This revolutionary one-stop treatment solution allows patients to undergo procedures for aneurysm repair, valve replacements and shunt closure devices in a room integrated with the latest imaging devices. The hybrid catheterization lab enables both surgical and intravascular procedures to occur sequentially or simultaneously, without moving the patient from one procedure room to another.

Our Hybrid Catheterization Lab, which opened in 2012, allows cardiologists and surgeons to perform transfemoral aortic valve replacements for patients at high risk for open-heart procedures. This less invasive procedure allows for highly reduced hospital stays, less scarring and quicker recoveries for patients.
