PRESS RELEASE: Lakeland Regional Cancer Center Now Offers Advanced Technology MRI/Ultrasound Fusion Biopsy for Prostate

Lakeland, FL – Lakeland Regional Cancer Center (LRCC) is pleased to announce that it will now use a state-of-the-art detection tool, the UroNav fusion system (UroNav), for analysis, planning and targeted biopsy of the prostate. UroNav combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with ultrasound to give doctors greater accuracy when sampling suspicious tissue. Lakeland Regional Cancer Center is the first and currently only healthcare provider in the communities it serves using this powerful cancer detection tool.

“At Lakeland Regional, we are constantly seeking out innovative treatments that use advanced technologies,” said Dr. Graham F. Greene, MD, FACS, FRCS, Lakeland Regional Cancer Center Executive Director and Lakeland Regional Health System Chief Academic Officer. “Targeted MRI/ultrasound biopsy is poised to become the new standard in prostate care. The UroNav system allows our oncologists to pinpoint cells for biopsy with significantly greater accuracy, potentially providing even earlier detection of prostate cancer.”

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American men.  However, early detection allows physicians to deliver multidisciplinary, individualized therapies that optimize a patient’s chances of survival.

The UroNav system works by combining pre-biopsy MRI information with the real-time information provided by ultrasound during the biopsy procedure. The system uses electromagnetic tracking, similar to the GPS in an automobile, to track the location and orientation of the biopsy device. A sophisticated algorithm maintains the fusion of magnetic resonance and ultrasound images, even when the patient moves. This process provides significantly enhanced accuracy when obtaining samples, eliminating the potential need for a second biopsy and often reducing the number of samples acquired. Other benefits include reduced recovery time, a lower risk of infection, and less bleeding and pain.
