Friday, May 24 2013

Elaine Thompson, PhD, FACHE, president and CEO of Lakeland Regional Health Systems received an honorary Doctor of Medical Science Degree at Arcadia University’s graduate commencement ceremony on May 16, 2013.

Arcadia University, located in Glenside, PA, is Philadelphia’s global university and a pioneer in international education. Arcadia is a top-ranked private university offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. With more than 80 fields of study, U.S. News & World Report ranks Arcadia University among the top tier of regional universities in the North.

Citing Thompson’s “extraordinary achievements in healthcare and her passion for higher education,” Brian Eckenrode, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Sciences at Arcadia University, presented Thompson with an honorary doctor of medical sciences degree.

“As a visionary leader, you study innovative methods to make tomorrow’s treatment capabilities accessible to today’s patients,” Eckenrode said. “Hospitals and health systems under your direction have consistently received high marks for patient satisfaction, showcasing empathy to those under your care.”

Thompson joined Lakeland Regional in 2010, after serving as president of Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

At Lakeland Regional, Thompson oversees the busiest single-site emergency department in the state, and she initiated a performance improvement effort, resulting in a redesigned facility and workflow. These improvements reduced wait times and walkouts, prompting national attention from other healthcare systems that are now taking her lead.

In addition, Thompson spearheaded a massive initiative to digitize Lakeland Regional, with a single electronic health records system. This implementation was the culmination of her commitment to advanced technologies and illustrates her ability to inspire and lead more than 4,500 employees to historic achievements with this critical improvement.

Thompson was also named to Becker’s “Top 100 Non-Profit Hospital CEOs to Know” and the “120 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know.”

Thompson received a PhD in Biomedical Science from Drexel University and a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Temple University.
