Diabetes Education Series: Helping You Live Well with Your Diagnosis

Millions of Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year, but with proper education, they are living long and healthy lives. Accredited by the American Diabetes Association, Lakeland Regional Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program is designed to help individuals not only live with their diagnosis, but live well. Since the inception of the program, hundreds of lives have been changed as they gained the tools they needed to improve their quality of life and take control of their diabetes.

The program consists of a total of 9.5 hours of diabetes education, which includes a one-hour individual assessment and 8.5 hours of group classes. In addition, through this program, participants take the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with a specialized diabetes nurse and a registered dietitian. The following classes are offered at various times and dates:

Initial Assessment (1 hour)

  • 30 minutes with diabetes nurse
  • 30 minutes with nutritionist

 The Joy of Eating with Diabetes 3.5 hours

  • Making Better Food Choices
  • Reading Food Labels
  • Eating Out
  • Carbohydrate Counting
  • Behavior Goals
  • Support Plan After Class
  • When Can I Cheat?

Medications & Monitoring (2.5 hours)

  • Medications & Monitoring
  • Relationship of diet, exercise and nutrition
  • What causes diabetes?
  • How do I tell if my meter is right?
  • What do my labs mean?
  • What happens if I get sick?
  • When should I call the doctor?

 Take Charge of Diabetes (2.5 hours)

  • How to treat/prevent hypoglycemia
  • How high is too high?
  • Diabetes and your body
  • How to prevent long term problems?
  • Role of exercise
  • Stress management
