Hybrid Minimally Invasive Procedures

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Lakeland Regional’s Heart Center is among the first in Florida to offer patients percutaneous transcatheter aortic valve replacement – a leading-edge, minimally-invasive treatment option for patients with aortic stenosis. Also known as “TAVR,” this procedure is specifically for patients who are at high surgical risk, due to their advanced age or fragile condition.

Lakeland Regional’s Andres Medina, MD, was a pioneer for the TAVR procedure. Beginning in 2008, he served as one of two surgical investigators for the single site participating in the PARTNER trial for the state, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and led to recent FDA approval for TAVR. Dr. Medina performed the first TAVR procedure in the state of Florida, and has since evaluated more than 140 successfully-completed TAVR cases and proctored other surgeons as they learned to master its techniques.

During the TAVR procedure, an FDA-approved bioprosthetic valve, which is manufactured by Edwards Lifesciences, is inserted through a catheter and implanted within the diseased aortic valve. Our team understands, first-hand, how this technology and procedure can bring hope and an improved quality of life to patients.
