Michael Spake, MHA, JD

Vice President External Affairs / Chief Compliance Officer

Educated in both law at the University of Richmond School of Law and health administration at the Medical College of Virginia campus at Virginia Commonwealth University, Michael Spake is Vice President of Administrative Services for Lakeland Regional Health Systems, overseeing the strategic management of governmental relations, public relations, external communications, development, and community partnerships as well as the creation, oversight, and day-to-day operations of the Compliance & Integrity and Internal Audit Programs.

His clear and unwavering commitment to excellence led to the integration of separate communications departments into a single Division of Strategic Support using contemporary analytics to optimize a strategic voice and focus supported by data.

Michael has an intentional, passionate and unrelenting focus on partnerships.   This passion strategically supports our partnership with the City Commission of Lakeland, who last year capped the health system’s lease payment for the first time in its 26 year history. In addition, he’s been instrumental in partnering with Polk County leadership, bringing together the newly opened Lakeland Regional Family Health Center and Polk HealthCare Plan participants to form a medical home model for qualified citizens.

Michael energetically led Lakeland Regional’s presence in Tallahassee and the local grassroots efforts in Lakeland during the 2012 legislative session, helping achieve a $26 million savings in potential Medicaid revenue reductions. In addition, funding was established for the new qualifying primary care centers such as the Lakeland Regional Family Health Center.  As a result, Lakeland Regional Health Systems was recently awarded $2,282,820 in grant dollars from the Agency for Health Care Administration’s Low Income Pool.  This was part of a $4 million grant jointly awarded to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, the Polk County Health Department, Peace River Center and the Polk HealthCare Plan.

Before joining Lakeland Regional Health Systems, Michael was on the executive leadership team at MCG Health, Inc., the operating company of the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics. As General Counsel, Michael executed several hospital alignment strategies in support of clinical service lines and mission oriented strategies for the Medical College of Georgia such as UME, GME, Clinical Research, and faculty recruitment. During this time, MCG Health, Inc. was recognized as a Thompson Reuters (now Truven) 100 Top Hospitals.

As Secretary to the Board of Directors of MCG Health, Inc., Michael helped transform the institutional governance of the hospital and university into a singular Georgia Health Sciences University system (GHSU). Today, GHSU includes a 478-bed Medical Center, 80 outpatient practice sites in one setting, a Critical Care Center housing a 13-county regional trauma center, and a154-bed Children’s Medical Center.
